Car seat basics for brief travelers

The one non-negotiable setup
Rear-facing infant seat, back seat, harness snug at or below shoulder level, chest clip at armpit height, no bulky jackets between baby and straps. That combination does the heavy lifting of car safety.
Ask FirstWeeks anything about your babyThe pinch test
After buckling, pinch the strap at the shoulder — if you can gather slack between your fingers, tighten. Snug enough that a coat of webbing hugs, not squeezes.
Is this normal for your baby?
FirstWeeks answers with your baby’s age and today’s log in mind — with pediatric sources attached.

Car seats are transport, not real estate
Sleeping in a moving car is fine and supervised; the risk pattern is the parked seat used as a bed — the semi-upright angle can compromise a young baby's airway. Arrived and asleep? Transfer to the flat crib.
The forgotten check
Most seats are installed imperfectly. A certified car seat check (fire stations, hospitals commonly offer free inspections) takes 20 minutes and upgrades your confidence permanently.
First longer trips
Plan feeding stops — take baby out of the seat for feeds; never bottle-prop in the seat. A passenger seat adult companion for the first big drive makes everything calmer.
