From bottle to cup: the off-ramp

Medically-informed · Sources: AAP, CDC · Updated July 2026 · 3 min read

The timeline nobody tells you

Cup practice starts far earlier than cup dependence ends: offer small sips from a cup around 6 months, right alongside solids. The actual off-ramp: begin phasing bottles out around the first birthday, aiming to be done by about 18 months. The reasons are unglamorous and real — prolonged bottle use is linked with tooth decay (especially the bedtime bottle), with drinking so much milk that food gets crowded out, and with a habit that only gets more beloved and harder to retire each month past two.

Cup types, ranked honestly

An open cup — tiny, adult-assisted, gloriously messy — is the gold standard for mouth-muscle development, and babies can start practicing sips before they can walk. A straw cup is a close second and travels better. The classic hard-spout sippy is the most convenient and the least useful: it preserves a sucking pattern rather than teaching drinking, so treat it as a transitional tool, not a destination. Whatever the vessel: milk and water only — juice has no required role, and sweet drinks in constant-access cups are the cavity delivery system.

Is this normal for your baby?

FirstWeeks answers with your baby’s age and today’s log in mind — with pediatric sources attached.

How the wean actually goes

One bottle at a time, easiest first: midday usually surrenders quietly, morning next, bedtime last — it's the emotional one. Swap the routine, not just the container: the bedtime bottle's job gets replaced by milk in a cup with a snack before the bath, then the familiar books-and-songs sequence, so comfort survives the container change. Expect a few days of protest per dropped bottle, offer the cup matter-of-factly, and don't negotiate at 2 AM — night bottles for a baby past a year are habit, not hunger, for the vast majority.

The hard no

No bottle in the crib — ever, at any age. Milk pooling around teeth overnight is the classic route to early childhood cavities, and a bottle as a solo sleep prop also has aspiration and ear-infection associations. If that ship already sailed, the fix is gradual: water down the crib bottle over a week or two until it's just water, at which point most babies fire it themselves.

When to check in

Talk to your pediatrician if your baby refuses all cup formats past 12 months, if milk intake stays so high that meals barely happen, or if weight wobbles during the transition. And the first dental visit — by the first birthday — is the natural checkpoint to sanity-check the plan.
