The 3 AM-proof sleep setup

Why this is article one
Almost every scary headline about infant sleep comes down to the sleep environment — and the environment is one of the few things entirely in your control. Set it up once, correctly, and every single sleep after that is safer on autopilot, no willpower required at 3 AM.
Ask FirstWeeks anything about your babyThe short version: A-B-C
Your baby sleeps safest Alone, on the Back, in a Crib. Alone means the crib holds a baby and nothing else — no blankets, pillows, bumpers, stuffed animals or positioners. Back means every sleep, naps included, until the first birthday. Crib means a firm, flat surface with a fitted sheet — a crib, bassinet or portable play yard that meets safety standards.
Is this normal for your baby?
FirstWeeks answers with your baby’s age and today’s log in mind — with pediatric sources attached.

Same room, own surface
Keeping the crib or bassinet in your room for at least the first six months is commonly recommended: it makes night feeds easier and is associated with lower sleep-related risk. Sharing a room is protective; sharing an adult bed is where risk climbs — soft mattresses, loose bedding and tired adults are a bad combination for a newborn.
Dress for the room, not the season
Overheating is the quiet risk people miss. Aim for a room that feels comfortable to a lightly dressed adult and put your baby in one more light layer than you would wear — a sleep sack instead of a blanket does the job. Check warmth on the chest or the back of the neck; hands and feet always run cool and will mislead you.
The couch exception that isn't
The most dangerous place for a newborn to sleep is on a couch or armchair with an exhausted adult. If you're fading during a night feed, put your baby down in the crib first — a crying baby in a safe crib is a far better outcome than two people asleep on a sofa.
Do it tonight
Strip the crib to mattress and fitted sheet. Move it into your room if it isn't there. Set the thermostat, pick the sleep sack. Done — you've just made every night of the next year meaningfully safer.
Less guessing tonight
Track the evening in one tap — then ask what it means.
