WEEKS 1–41–2 min

Medically-informed · Sources: CDC · Updated June 2026

Why it helps

Feeds the grasp reflex that becomes voluntary holding.

How to do it

  1. Stroke your baby's palm with your finger
  2. Let the little fist close around it
  3. Gently tug — feel the grip resist — release and repeat on the other hand
Stop if you see

Stop if hands stay tightly fisted and baby gets upset — try after a feed.
