Side-lying play

WEEKS 2–62–4 min per side

Medically-informed · Sources: CDC · Updated June 2026

Why it helps

A gentle strength position that also gives the head a break from lying flat.

How to do it

  1. Lay your baby on one side on the floor, a rolled towel behind the back for support
  2. Place your face or a high-contrast card in view
  3. Switch sides halfway — awake and supervised only
Stop if you see

Stop and place on the back if baby starts to doze — sleep is always on the back.
