Your baby at 18 weeks: rolling era begins

Medically-informed · Sources: CDC · Updated June 2026

New skill, restless nights: babies commonly practice rolling in their sleep exactly when you'd prefer they didn't.

What’s happening

Practice happens at 2 AM

Brains rehearse new motor skills during sleep. A baby who flips over and complains is commonly seen for a few weeks around each new skill.

Back to sleep, always start there

Keep placing baby on the back for every sleep. Once baby rolls both ways on their own, they may stay where they roll — but the sleep space must be completely bare.

Reaching gets accurate

Swipes become grabs; whatever is within reach is now baby's property and goes straight to the mouth.

What to do

  • Audit the sleep space again: nothing loose, nothing within pull distance
  • Move small objects out of arm's reach during floor time
  • Keep bedtime boring and identical every night

When to check in

Baby stuck face-down and unable to turn the head to breathe comfortably — reposition and mention it at your next visit; hard-to-rouse or breathing that looks laboured is urgent care.
