Your baby at 30 weeks: pre-launch

Medically-informed · Sources: CDC · Updated June 2026

Rocking, scooting, reverse gear: locomotion is imminent, and the house is about to feel much smaller.

What’s happening

Ready, set

Hands-and-knees rocking commonly precedes crawling by a few weeks. Backwards motion often comes first — the engine works, the steering is learning.

Real babyproofing week

Before movement starts, do the crawl-test yourself: outlets, cords, stair gates, cabinet locks, anchored furniture, small objects at floor level.

Consonant chains

Long babble runs — 'bababa', 'dadada' — are commonly seen; they're speech scaffolding, not names yet (whatever grandpa claims about 'dada').

What to do

  • Babyproof one room completely as the free-roam zone
  • Anchor tall furniture and the TV — this is the week
  • Cheer the effort, not just the result: struggle is the workout

When to check in

Persistent stiffness, floppiness, or no interest in moving toward toys — discuss with your pediatrician.
