The risk map just changed

Level one babyproofing assumed a stationary baby. A crawler who pulls to stand rewrites the physics: everything within a vertical arm's reach is now reachable, everything unstable is now a lever, and the floor is the primary habitat. The good news: real-world injury data is concentrated in a short list, so a focused sweep beats padding the entire house.

The heavy hitters, in order

Anchor furniture and the TV first — tip-overs of dressers and televisions are among the most serious home hazards for this exact age, and the fix is a $10 strap into a wall stud. Stairs second: hardware-mounted gates at the top (pressure gates are for doorways, never for the top of stairs). Third, strangulation lines: blind cords looped up out of reach or replaced with cordless, cables shortened, nothing dangling over the crib. Fourth, water: hot-water heater dialed to 120 °F (49 °C) or below, and never leave a baby alone in bath water — not for the length of one text message.

The floor census

Get down to baby altitude and crawl the route yourself; you'll find coins, buttons, batteries and the dog's kibble your standing eyes miss. The choking gauge: anything that fits through a toilet-paper tube is airway-sized. Button batteries and magnets are their own emergency category — if swallowed, that's immediate emergency care, not watchful waiting. The kitchen and the edges

Pot handles turned inward, back burners preferred, oven-door zone treated as hot territory, sharp corner guards where the coffee table meets a wobbly new stander. Outlet covers on unused sockets. Houseplants audited — several common ones are toxic — and trash cans with latching lids, because a baby's curiosity rates garbage five stars.

Supervision math

No sweep replaces eyes — but a well-proofed home changes what supervision means: from goalkeeper lunges to calm presence. Re-run the audit every couple of months; a baby who can climb rewrites the map again, and the stroller-height shelf that was safe in month eight is a ladder rung in month fourteen.
