Your baby at 20 weeks: teething watch

Medically-informed · Sources: CDC · Updated June 2026

Drool by the litre, everything in the mouth, cranky evenings — the pre-teeth season commonly opens around now, even if the first tooth is months away.

What’s happening

What teething commonly looks like

Extra drool, gum rubbing, chewing on everything, mild fussiness. What it commonly does NOT cause: high fever, diarrhea or rash — those mean something else and deserve a pediatrician call.

First tooth timing is wide

Anywhere from ~4 to 12+ months is commonly seen; bottom front teeth usually lead.

Chilled relief

A refrigerated (not frozen) teether or a clean cool washcloth to chew is the safe go-to. Skip teething gels and amber necklaces — pediatric guidance advises against both.

What to do

  • Stock two or three solid one-piece teethers
  • Wipe the chin often — drool rash prevention is easier than treatment
  • Keep evening expectations low on cranky days

When to check in

Fever 100.4°F+, refusal to feed, or diarrhea — don't file it under teething; call your pediatrician.
