Your baby at 21 weeks: rolling both ways
Medically-informed · Sources: CDC · Updated June 2026
Back-to-tummy commonly joins the repertoire — and the floor becomes a training field.
What’s happening
The full roll
Once both directions click, rolling becomes transport. Supervised floor freedom is the best gift you can give this skill.
Sitting practice starts
Propped on your lap or between your legs, baby holds the tripod pose for moments at a time.
Hands work together
Passing a toy hand to hand and holding two things at once are commonly seen wins around this stretch.
What to do
- Clear a floor zone: blanket, three toys, zero small objects
- Practice supported sitting a few minutes a day
- Lower the crib mattress if it's still on the newborn height
When to check in
Body consistently stiff or floppy, or strong preference for using only one side — bring it up with your pediatrician.
